SERP lice are parasitic, hard-to-remove sites that infest branded search results.
They bid on trademarked terms. They aren’t joined to your affiliate program. They tend to be based outside of the US, often operating from Southeast Asia or Hong Kong. These are typically low-cost, template-based coupon sites that promote hallucinated offers and monetize through display ads and toolbar installs.
SERP lice tend to be an SEM-driven vector.
They show up through paid search, not organic SEO. They rarely rank naturally and don’t bother building long-term authority or content. Instead, they exploit auctions that don’t have many bidders (i.e. they have low competition and therefore a low price) but that are made by high-intent shoppers to hijack branded searches on a per-click basis.
Unseen Costs, Distracted Users, and Attribution Erosion
By siphoning high-intent traffic they undermine marketers’ attribution efforts. They reduce overall ad integrity by diverting users down a warren of extra pages designed to increase ad views which means they are delivering negative value to users. They may also link out to competitors or authorized retailers, further diverting valuable users away from the brand’s higher-margin direct-to-consumer efforts.
Why They’re Hard to Kill
They appear only in paid search (not SEO), rotate in a new domains when the old one has been shut down, and aren’t usually forthcoming in their “About Us” section. They monetize without tracking links, which means affiliate teams who would normally police these simply ignore them making traditional affiliate policing mechanisms ineffective by themselves. And, even if you did track them, because many operate from offshore jurisdictions, enforcement is often slow, complicated, or impractical. All of these together make them fast-moving, difficult to track, and hard to threaten.
In”ad”vertent Funding
What’s worse is that your marketing department may be unintentionally funding these sites, either directly through their display advertising budget or indirectly through toolbar partnerships. Both of these may look like great marketing investments, except when you dig into the details.
